How to get to Liwa Desert

The Liwa Desert is a large area of sand dunes on the northern edge of the Rub’ al Khali Desert, the world’s largest uninterrupted desert. It is about 150 km southwest of Abu Dhabi city1. It is a popular destination for desert safaris and camping.

It is spread across 1000 kilometers between United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, Yemen and Oman.

  • Self-driving: If you have your own car or you can rent one, you can drive to Liwa desert by following the E11 highway from Abu Dhabi or Dubai. The drive takes about 2.5 hours from Abu Dhabi and 3.5 hours from Dubai. However, if you want to explore the dunes and the Empty Quarter, you will need a 4x4 vehicle and some off-road driving skills. It is not recommended to go alone, as the desert can be dangerous and unpredictable. You should also carry enough water, food, fuel, and emergency supplies.
  • Tour operators: There are several tour operators and guides that offer Liwa desert safari experiences from Abu Dhabi or Dubai. They will pick you up from your hotel or location and take you to Liwa desert in a 4x4 vehicle. You can choose from different packages, such as morning, afternoon, evening, or overnight safaris. Some of the activities that you can enjoy are dune bashing, camel riding, sandboarding, stargazing, and camping. You can also visit some of the attractions in Liwa, such as the Moreeb dune, the Liwa Oasis, and the Liwa Forts. 
  • Public transport: There is a bus service from Abu Dhabi’s Central bus stand near Al Wahda Mall to Liwa’s Mezairaa Bus station. The bus operates twice a day and costs 30 AED for a one-way ticket. The journey takes about 3.5 hours. However, this option is only suitable if you want to visit the town of Liwa and the nearby oasis. You will not be able to access the dunes and the Empty Quarter by public transport.
